The Dharmambudhi Tank Project
with Prerna Bishnoi and Pooja Gupta
2011, HD video, 6:45 mins
The Dharmambudhi Tank (presently Majestic Bus Stand) has been in the heart of Bangalore for over a hundred years. Perhaps its centrality has been at the root of its constant metamorphosis – in this last century it has gone from being a tank outside of Kempe Gowda’s fort, to a congress rally/exhibition ground, to the city’s central bus station. At a time when it is about to take on its newest avatar – that of a metro station – we interview four people who have had deep personal association with the area. A priest of a temple once situated at its banks, a celebrated theatre actor who performed on the tank bed, an erstwhile highschooler of a Gandhi Nagar school and the wife of an engineer who helped construct the bus depot recollect personal histories of the area.
This film was made as part of Water Stories at Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, led by oral historian, Dr. Indira Chowdury.
