sound-and-text film, 2013, 30 mins
Hospital is a work that moves through a private hospital in Coimbatore, India. It emerged from a series of field recordings of medical environments. Hospital practices a non-medical gaze that is guided by listening. It offers a counterpoint to navigating 'anaesthetized environments' through field recordings, fictional vignettes, interviews and case notes (following the erstwhile medical practice of dictating observations and instructions about patients on tape). These recorded documents come together to dwell in cinematic spaces that would normally be assessed and accessed only in a 'strictly' medical context.
In its first form, Hospital was a sound walk. An audio piece and a book of photographs led participants through the hospital building. The recordings were later edited into a sound-and-text film to be heard on headphones.
