ಕೆರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕೆರೆ / The Lake and The Lake forthcoming, HD video, India/USA, 39 mins
Polluted lakes in Bangalore, “India’s Silicon Valley”, produce toxic foams and fires that disrupt our understanding of what a lake can be. Such bewildering environmental changes are often met with crisis narratives and efforts to "save the lakes" without tending to the distribution of precarity around them. The Lake and The Lake strays away from crisis, questioning the norms of landscape image-making by enacting an observational mode that is interrupted by flying foam, noxious gases, daydreams, and questions from passers-by. Despite its toxicity, the lake is a valuable refuge where multiple counter-publics coexist. Standing alongside fishing communities, waste workers, private security guards, street dogs, and children, it is evident that there is no nature that doesn't also include all of us.Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, English, and Bangla are spoken and sung in the film amidst a chorus of non-human sounds.
